Solar Eclipse in Antarctica

Antarctica

* Cruise to the Falkland Islands, South Georgia and Antarctica & experience a rare Total Solar Eclipse.

* The eclipse will move from the East to the West, a phenomena only possible in the Polar Regions.

* Eclipses in the Polar Regions are a once in a lifetime experience.

* Totality (complete coverage) will occur just after 7am on the 4th December, 2021.

When day turns into night and the whole world seems to stop for a few moments. One of Earths most magical experiences would have to be, a Solar Eclipse. Words cannot describe the feeling that is felt, the energy it creates and the sight of a blacked out sun. For those who have witnessed a Total Eclipse, will understand and know why people travel around the world, following these events. But imagine witnessing one, while being immersed in one of the planets greatest wonders, the Antarctic! You will be surrounded by one of the last remaining wildernesses, ice and snow, and witness something that is only possible at the poles, an East to West eclipse. Total solar eclipses occur roughly every 18 months, however to witness one in the Polar Regions, is a once in a lifetime opportunity. Eclipses can only be viewed on specific path locations that almost never happen in the Polar Regions, but on the 4th of December 2021, this rare event will be available through iExpeditions. What better place to witness this wondrous cosmic event, than floating amongst the sea ice in the wildest place on Earth?

POLAR DISCOVERIES & ONE VERY FAMOUS COSMIC EVENT

To witness this once in a lifetime event, our ships will stand at the edge of the sea ice in the Weddell Sea, between South Orkneys and South Georgia Islands, where we will be perfectly positioned in the centre of the moon shadow, for optimal viewing of the Eclipse.

The majority of the Eclipse voyages will include exploring the Falkland Islands, South Georgia and the Antarctic Peninsula. The Falkland Islands are a treeless archipelago in the Antarctic climate zone, where 63 known species of bird’s breed on the islands, 16 of which are endemic to the region, including 5 of the 17 penguin species found around the world. As we travel further south, we will visit the less known South Georgia Island, home to the largest Macaroni Penguin population in the world. These guys have the amazing orange feathers sticking up from their heads. Ever wondered where the lyrics from Yankie Doodle came from? “He stuck a feather in his hat and called it Macaroni”. Not only does this island host a highly fashionable bird, it’s also home to the Elephant seal, the world’s largest seal. People have declared South Georgia Island as one of the best places in the Antarctic to view wildlife, plus when else are you going to experience such a remote part of the world? You will then travel due East of the Antarctic Peninsula to position the ship in one of the best locations to view the eclipse.

What is a Total Solar Eclipse:

A Total Solar Eclipse is different to an Annual or Partial Eclipse, in which the moon’s diameter appears larger than the sun and totally obscures the view of the sun from the viewer’s perspective. The moon casts an unearthly shadow and plunges day into night in a matter of seconds. As you can see from the image, this shadow occurs along a very find line, shown by the blue arc and stretches thousands of kilometres. This line will pass directly overhead, giving people the ultimate Eclipse experience.

From here you will cruise on to explore the famous Antarctic Peninsula, the largest peninsula on western Antarctica. The peninsula protrudes 1300km and is covered in almost 3000m peaks and glaciers plunging into the surrounding ice shelves. Here you will experience the true wilderness of Antarctica.

The Eclipse will happen in just over two years and already the voyages are generating a lot of interest. We currently have three voyages that have released their sailing schedule around the Eclipse, with details outlined below.
