Glacier Bay Getaway: Wilderness & Wildlife

  • Overview

Bartlett Cove, Glacier Bay National Park, Icy Strait Passengers will board the Snow Goose at the Park Service Dock in Bartlett Cove, Glacier Bay – a short taxicab ride from the town of Gustavus. Following a safety and crew orientation, we will set sail into Glacier Bay National Park and Preserve. For the next 8 days, we will cruise, kayak, and hike this magnificent gem of our National Park System. The waters here are icy cold and the air is crisp and clear. Because Glacier Bay is a National Park and affords all the protections that come with such status, wildlife abounds within the bay. Guests can look to the possibility of intimate contact with humpback whales, bears, moose, wolves, sea otters, seals, sea lions, goats and eagles to name a few. Since Glacier Bay has just recently emerged from the ice, it is considered a geologically young area. A trip up Glacier Bay is like a trip back in time. Old growth forests give way to bare rock as we make our way back into the upper reaches of the bay. Here, the tidewater glaciers still rumble and roar as they make their slow retreat back, dropping huge icebergs into the sea. Magnificent granite cliffs tower above our small ship as we wind our way up the fjord through the ice floes towards the faces of these massive glaciers. Along the way, our expert naturalist and guide will point out the finer points of plant succession, glaciations’, local geology, and the interconnectedness of the animals that call this area home. The biodiversity of this place is simply amazing. Evenings will bring secluded anchorages with time to reflect and share a delicious meal prepared by our Chef in the galley. Many evenings will offer time to quietly explore the shores by kayak or slowly motoring along in the skiff. It's amazing how much can be seen and heard along the shores in the quiet evening time. Before bed, the Captain will bring out the charts to review the happenings of the day and to make a plan for the following day. We keep the schedule incredibly flexible to allow for adaptation to the multitude of variables that can be encountered along the way. Toward the end of the trip, we plan to leave Glacier Bay and head west toward the outer coast of Alaska. Here, in the near-coastal environment, we will encounter a completely different landscape of windswept islands, rugged sea cliffs, and whirling seabirds. The last day of our trip will bring us back to Bartlett Cove, where we will arrive at 11 am. With a newfound appreciation of the world in which we live, and memories to last a lifetime, guests will disembark. Many will opt to catch the afternoon flight back to Juneau to continue on with their Alaska adventures or head home, while others may want to stay in one of the hotels or bed and breakfasts in Gustavus to further experience a small, coastal Alaska town.

A trip up Glacier Bay is like a trip back in time. Old growth forests give way to bare rock as we make our way up into the upper reaches of the bay. Here, tidewater glaciers rumble and roar as they make their dramatic movements, all the while calving huge icebergs into the sea. Magnificent cliffs tower above our small ship as we wind our way up the fjord through the ice floes towards the faces of these massive glaciers. Along the way, Andrew and Sean will adjust our itinerary to maximize opportunities for photographing whales, bears, sea otters, puffins, wolves and the dynamic landscape. This will be a departure specifically geared toward photographing this amazing environment as widely as possible so that you can learn and benefit from Sean and Andrew’s years of experience photographing the natural environment.

Passengers will board the Snow Goose at the Park Service Dock in Bartlett Cove, Glacier Bay – a short taxicab ride from the town of Gustavus. Following lunch and a brief safety and crew orientation we will set sail into Glacier Bay National Park and Preserve. For the next six days we will cruise, kayak, and hike this magnificent gem of our National Park System. Our aim will be to find and spend time photographing subjects that suit the weather and wildlife that we encounter. On the sixth day, we will venture outside of Glacier Bay proper into Icy Straits towards the Gulf of Alaska where humpback whales congregate.

Secluded evening anchorages allow time around dinner with Sean and Andrew to review images from the day and for them to share their photographic knowledge with you. Some evenings will allow exploration of the shore by kayak or on land with an opportunity to photograph in dramatic late light. It's amazing how much can be seen and heard along the shores in the quiet evening time. Before turning in we will bring out the charts to review the journey so far and to make a plan for the following day. The schedule is very flexible to allow for adaptation to the photographic variables that will be encountered along the way.

The last day of our trip will bring us back to Gustavus, where we will arrive with a new appreciation of the world in which we live, and with incredible photographs and memories to last a lifetime. Many will opt to catch the afternoon flight back to Juneau to continue on with their Alaska adventures or head home. Others may want to stay in one of the hotels or bed and breakfasts in Gustavus to further experience a remote Alaska town.

*Remember: wildlife is wild life, so when it comes to stuff like whales and bears, these ratings show the likelihood of seeing those things as opposed to a guarantee. But that’s nature for ya – and who would want it any other way?

Experienced Photo Guides: Andrew Peacock & Sean Neilson

Join photographers Andrew Peacock and Sean Neilson on the adventure of a lifetime. Glacier Bay National Park in Alaska is an astounding natural wonder, teeming with wildlife in an unparalleled wilderness setting. Wilderness, whales, bears and ice are only the beginning. Wildflowers, dramatic mountain landscapes, birds, intertidal creatures and so much more make this destination a must-see for any outdoor enthusiast. There are few places in the world where such a vast variety of wildlife can be seen within such a concentrated geographical area.

Naturalist Sean Neilson has been studying and photographing the area for over two decades. He makes his year-round home in the tiny community of Gustavus (pop. 400), adjacent to Glacier Bay National Park’s southern boundary. For many years, Sean worked as a park ranger for the National Park Service aboard cruise ships and tour boats, but now he dedicates his professional time to leading smaller, more intimate groups to locales that very few others even know about.

Sean’s first visit to Glacier Bay was in 1993. He fell in love with the place and returned in the spring of 2000 to work for the National Park Service as a ranger. Three years later, he met his wife, Janet, who also works for the Park Service as a marine biologist specializing in humpback whales. When Sean is not photographing the Bay or trying to get his kids to school on time, he spends much of his time traveling around the region living a subsistence lifestyle. Whether it is hunting deer, fishing for halibut and salmon, tending the garden, or gathering mushrooms and berries, Sean spends much of his free time outside in the wet and wild country that is Glacier Bay and Icy Strait.

Adventure Photographer Dr. Andrew Peacock (www.footloosefotography.com) has been a finalist for the past 5 years in the Australian Geographic Nature Photographer of the Year awards. He has extensive polar photography experience and leads photo tours for Australian company Crooked Compass and works on expedition ships as a photo instructor. He teamed up with Sean on a personal trip to photograph in Glacier Bay a couple of years ago and they had so much fun taking great images that they decided it would be a shame not to share the experience with others when it came time to do it all again. The Snow Goose is the perfect small boat platform from which they can inspire and instruct photographers of all levels interested in nature photography.

    SNOW GOOSE

Built with purpose, the Snow Goose was constructed in Ketchikan, Alaska in 1973 as a private yacht. She was designed by marine architect Ed Monk to cruise the Inside Passage and modified in 1983 to be a US Coast Guard inspected passenger vessel. Captain Dan Liden bought the Snow Goose in 2006 and has been putting her to work in a variety of ways ever since.

The Snow Goose aims to deliver a unique and personal experience for passengers. Guided by our experienced and knowledgeable crew we take you to the remote waters, islands, and shorelines of the majestic and mysterious Southeast Alaska. Along the way we will teach you about marine mammals, wildlife and native vegetation. Whilst always providing a safe and enjoyable environment, the crew specifically aims to differentiate the Snow Goose from other vessels by enabling passengers to become involved in many aspects of boat life. From navigation to identifying plants and animals, we believe an interactive environment helps guests to experience Alaska up close and generates a sense of adventure and stewardship.

In Alaska we rely on many modes of transportation and pride ourselves on the quality of equipment we provide. Our custom aluminum inflatable skiff was built locally in Washington State, specifically for operating in Alaska. The deep “V” hull and 90 hp outboard not only gets us to shore but also opens the door to exploration when on the anchor. As the ‘Gosling’ to the ‘Goose’, the skiff is extremely stable, reliable and a vital link to accessing the remote trails, rivers, and beaches we visit.

As experienced kayakers, we know how a quality kayak paddles. So we’ve spared no expense on our six Carbonlite 2000 Eddyline Whisper double kayaks. They are great for beginners and advanced kayakers alike and provide the perfect way to peacefully explore remote areas on your own. We provide all the necessary equipment to make your kayaking experience the most comfortable and awe-inspiring journey possible.

We explore these waters with the same spirit that the Snow Goose has maintained since 1973 as researchers, stewards, students, and awestruck explorers. It’s with great pleasure that we welcome you aboard the Snow Goose. We want the boat to truly be your home away from home and will do everything we give you the best adventure southeast Alaska has to offer.
