With summer in full swing, penguin highways are busy with traffic between rookeries and beach as parents hurry to fatten up chicks. Glaciers shed ice with an echoing roar and waterways are alive with feeding and breaching whales. Zodiacs whisk us on whale-watching cruises and amongst glorious icebergs. The near-midnight sun powers an explosion of life. What an unforgettable way to start the year!
Day 1 - Punta Arenas; Embarkation Day
Fly from Punta Arenas to Puerto Williams. Enjoy lunch at a local lodge before a guided tour of the rustic port and beautiful surrounds. Embark Polar Pioneer in the late afternoon and set sail along the Beagle Channel. Additional Information: We recommend you arrive into Punta Arenas at least one day prior to you expedition start date. A transfer to Punta Arenas is included from Aurora Expeditions' preferred hotel on Day 1.
Day 2/3 - Drake Passage
Our Drake Passage crossing offers cape petrels darting about the ship, black-browed and wandering albatross soaring, and Wilson’s storm petrels flitting above the sea. Learn about Antarctica from our expert naturalist and safety and environmental guidelines from our expedition team as we prepare for our first landing, possibly late on Day 3.
Day 4/9 - Antarctica Peninsula
An overnight passage along Gerlache Strait delivers us to the stunning Antarctic Peninsula, an ethereal wonderland of vast proportions. Aboard Zodiacs, we explore penguin rookeries, historic sites and scientific stations and cruise near exquisite icebergs. Our kayakers glide into secluded bays, enjoying up-close wildlife encounters and appreciating the immense landscape as they float silently in their crafts. Stepping ashore on the continent itself creates an everlasting memory, especially if it involves a bum-slide down a steep snow slope! We immerse ourselves in nature, spontaneity and having fun, making sure to pause and celebrate as we bring in the New Year. We make the most of every day and a fair bit of each night as well. If the weather allows, we’ll have a sleep-out on the ice – reminiscent of explorers past.
Day 10 - King George Island to Punta Arenas
We arrive at mountainous King George Island, the largest of the South Shetlands. Time and weather permitting, we explore Fildes Bay and visit the Russian Orthodox Trinity Church at Bellingshausen Station, before catching our charter flight back to Punta Arenas in Chile and transferring to our hotel.
Day 11 - Punta Arenas
After breakfast, we bid farewell to our new friends, before continuing on with our own arrangements. Additional information: Onward flights from Punta Arenas should not be booked until after 1200.

Armed with your very own set of snowshoes and ski poles, you’ll be led by our expert guides who will provide all the instruction you need. Snowshoeing is an excellent way to ascend to some of Antarctica’s best vantage points, stretch the legs and take in the most spectacular scenery on the planet. Snowshoeing is the perfect activity for everyone, with no previous experience required. Join in on the fun and discover a different slice of Antarctica!
Celebrate your New Years' Eve under the midnight sun in Antarctica.
Adelie penguins are the most abundant of all penguin species and are there estimated to be some 5 million birds. They have been an incredibly successful species living further south than any other species and have one of the oldest continually used rookeries, which has existed for some 6,000 years.
Our Fly/Cruise programs an excellent choice to navigate the Drake Passage quickly. This expedition comprises of 1 or 2 charter flights across the Drake Passage, so you need not worry about crossing the passage by sea. These expeditions are great options and often allow for an increased amount of time around the continent.
On board you will be provided with expedition boots and a highquality wind and waterproof expedition jacket
Catering to both amateurs and the more experienced photographers, our onboard team of photography guides deliver photography workshops and one-on-one instruction from the deck or Zodiacs and during landings.
Your expedition on board the Greg Mortimer includes a charter flight to/from the ship.
Pre and post-cruise transfers are provided, as well as 1 night post-cruise accommodation in Punta Arenas. A tour of Punta Arenas township is also provide on day 1 of the expedition, prior to boarding your charter flight.

POLAR PIONEER
The legendary MV Polar Pioneer is a strong, capable veteran expedition ship loved by guests and expedition leaders for her capability in ice and her small size with a proven track record exploring the remote polar regions over the last 19 seasons.
Her new Scandinavian owners are currently doing an extensive refit upgrading her to today’s standards and she will be ready for the 2022 Arctic season.
She benefits from taking just 48 guests on an authentic expedition adventure free from the crowds of larger vessels. All guests can fit in the Zodiacs at the same time ensuring there is no waiting to go ashore and all guests can explore at the same time.
The MV Polar Pioneer was built in Finland in 1982, and the ship was originally an ice-strengthened research vessel with ice class 1A Super, which is perfect for navigation in polar regions with heavy sea ice.
She can transit open water crossings with ease and comfort due to the integrated dynamic water ballast system, which guarantees a great reduction of rolling in heavy seas. Her ingenious stability system works marvellously also during the zodiac’s loading/unloading operations or while sitting at anchor. As a result, the Polar Pioneer is one of the most stable vessels currently in operations in the Polar regions.
