  • Itinerary
    • Day 1 - Oslo to Longyearbyen; Embarkation Day

Fly from Oslo to the administrative capital of Svalbard, Longyearbyen, where you will board Eclipse and be warmly welcomed by the crew. Toast the start of your adventure at tonight’s welcome reception where the Captain will introduce the crew and your expert Discovery Team.

Please book your flight to arrive prior to 5am. A pre tour night or city stay is advisable to ensure you meet the included flight to Longyearbyen on embarkation day. Your included ontour flight will not be finalised until closer to departure.

    • Day 2/4 - Svalbard Archipelago

The Svalbard Archipelago is one of the world’s northernmost inhabited areas, with rugged glaciers and frozen tundras waiting to be explored. Due to her size and unique technological capabilities, Eclipse will take you on an in-depth exploration of this fragile region of vast environmental significance with minimal impact. Due to the extraordinary nature of the region, the sailing and expedition schedule is flexible. Your experienced Captain and Discovery Leader will carefully plan each day’s activities based on the conditions.
Discovery: Our cruises include a vast range of tailored Discovery experiences and getting out into the big wild will be a highlight. Equipped with a fleet of Zodiacs, kayaks and a submarine (additional cost and subject to regulatory approval), daily Discovery excursions to search for the wildlife, marine life and their predators will take you to places of your wildest dreams.

Eclipse cruises in the prime time for wildlife spotting, and there will be opportunities to be on the lookout for the dominant predators including Polar bear, who number as many as 3,000 animals, as well as the Arctic fox. Marine species include the carefully protected walrus with its characteristic tusks and several species of whales. Once hunted almost out of existence in a region now transformed into a dedicated conservation area, your encounters with these giants of the sea will be a memory to treasure. There will be the chance to cruise secluded bays and stunning fjords and glaciers on the west coast of the island. Each day, the Discovery Leaders will schedule activities so that when you’re on board you’ll have plenty to keep you occupied, including entertaining presentations, documentaries and more. There will also be time for you to relax in your suite, watch the live streaming on your TV from the exterior cameras, and tempt your palate as you explore the extensive range of dining options.

    • Day 5/6 - At Sea - Towards Greenland

Cruise towards the East Coast of Greenland, crossing the Greenland Sea and following the edge of the ice. Relax on board and make use of the Spa Sanctuary or even take a yoga class in the studio. There’ll be insightful lectures and presentations from the Discovery Team in the theatre. From your verandah keep an eye out for whales and sea ice.

    • Day 7 - North East Greenland

Approaching North East Greenland you may encounter a variety of seabirds such as northern Fulmar and migratory Brunnichs guillemots. This stretch of coastline is ripe for exploration, with its many secrets locked in place by drift ice for up to eight months each year. Home to polar bear, snowy owl and musk ox, it’s the world’s largest national park, covering 972,000km2, most of which is inland ice, and the rest a fjord landscape.

Discovery: Enjoy Discovery excursions exploring by Zodiac, looking for musk ox, Arctic hare and eider ducks, or discover old trappers huts on hikes across the tundra. Conditions permitting, there will be a good chance for kayakers to paddle the waterways.

    • Day 8/12 - East Coast Fjords

Spend five days cruising and exploring Greenland’s magnificent East Coast Fjords, the world’s largest fjord system. Cruise among glorious icebergs and active volcanoes and feel the spray of thundering waterfalls. Enter Kaiser Franz Josef Fjord, a remote and rarely visited fjord system that lies within the North East Greenland National Park with countless opportunities for exploration. Cruising through Kong Oskar Fjord you will marvel at the geological beauty of the mountains. Head south along the coast of Liverpool Land, on a passage that is dependent on ice conditions, to reach Scoresby Sund, the world’s biggest fjord. Massive glaciers dump into this fjord, the birthplace of the famous big Greenland icebergs. Visit the remote Inuit community of Ittoqqortoormiit (Scoresby Town) to learn about their lifestyle in this remote and harsh environment.

Discovery: Partake in Discovery excursions from hiking across the tundra in search of ancient graveyards and abandoned summer villages occupied 3,000 years ago by Eskimos. This area provides excellent opportunities for kayaking in its maze of calm, interconnecting waterways. If luck is on your side, the shy and sometimes elusive wildlife may be seen, from musk oxen to Arctic hares.

    • Day 13 - At Sea - Towards Iceland

Cruise the Denmark Strait across to the Icelandic capital of Reykjavik. The expert Discovery Team will recount your extraordinary adventures to leave you with a rich understanding and lasting memories of this very remote, pristine and fragile environment.

    • Day 14 - Reykjavik, Iceland: Disembarkation

Iceland’s capital city signals the end of your cruise as you disembark taking away a lifetime of wonderful memories. Please book flights to depart after 12.00pm.

Please consider that our voyages are expeditionary in nature. This means, that there are no concrete itineraries, your captain and expedition leader will utilise their vast experience to chart the best course for your expedition depending on the climatic and environmental conditions. Endless Arctic nights

Svalbard is the Arctic North as you always dreamed it existed. This wondrous archipelago is a land of dramatic snow-drowned peaks and glaciers, of vast icefields and forbidding icebergs, an elemental place where the seemingly endless Arctic night and the perpetual sunlight of summer carry a deeper kind of magic. One of Europe's last great wildernesses, this is also the domain of more polar bears than people, a terrain rich in epic legends of polar exploration.

    The Polar Bear

To many people, the polar bear is the Arctic. The sight of such an impressive silky white bear wandering the frozen Arctic seas in search of seals symbolizes the cold, isolated nature of the Arctic so well. Polar bears are marine mammals because they spend so much of their lives away from land. In the high Arctic where there is always some sea ice to travel on, polar bears range over ice floes in the pack ice hunting seals all summer. In some areas (e.g. southern Hudson Bay, southern Svalbard) they are simply forced to come ashore. Polar bears rarely venture inland.
