Sailing to Antarctica on Ocean Tramp (Sail down / Fly back)

  • Overview

Antarctic Fly-Sail Expedition - Fly One Way And Sail The Other

The best of all worlds – an intimate up-close Antarctica experience on an Expedition Sailing Yacht combined with the convenience and time-saving travel of Flying across the Drake!

Explore Antarctica on an Expedition Sailboat where we will encounter penguin colonies, breaching whales, and Leopard Seals. Each day is something new – we take in what Antarctica gives to us, with the flexibility of a small yacht. We will visit penguin colonies and watch many types of seals. We will explore from eye level with Zodiac tours and kayaks. Plus, if the weather allows, anyone interested can sleep a night ashore!

We will be reminded of the brave souls who have come before us when we see remains of old whaling stations. If we are lucky we may even get to visit an active national science station while in the peninsula.

No matter what we do and no matter what the weather, your time in Antarctica will be one of a lifetime. Your trip will be filled with fantastic photos, unforgettable evening Zodiac rides through the ice, watching sculpted icebergs floating past. It is unlike any other place you will experience on the planet.

At the end of your trip – relax and digest your experience with two nights at Lakutaia Lodge in Puerto Williams, Chile, a remote town on Navarino Island facing the famous Beagle Channel.  From here explore the flora, fauna, and native Yaghan history of the island by visiting the museum and exploring during excellent half day and full day hikes.

Your trip will start and end in Ushuaia.  The transfer from Puerto Williams, Chile, to Ushuaia is included in the price, as is the two nights in Puerto Williams, one night in Punta Arenas, and the transfer from Punta Arenas to Puerto Williams.  See itinerary below for full details.

On ALL of our voyages we will have a Guest Scientist who will be actively collecting data and doing research on the trip. Guests are invited to help with the science first hand! In addition the scientist will give presentations during the trip and will always be happy to answer questions about their on-going research.

Ocean Tramp is a 66 feet ketch rigged sailboat, with 5 cabins. She very comfortably can carry 8 guests plus three crew members and one scientist. She is a very fast sailboat thanks to her long length, making for a short passage if sailing across the Drake and is superb once in Antarctica. She is ideal for photographers, hikers, divers, scientists and all sort of expeditions that need a large capacity vessel with plenty of storage as well as the needed comfort when living on a sailboat for longer periods of time.  Scroll down for a video tour of the inside.

She has a broadband 4G radar, AIS, 3 VHFs, SSB Radio, 3 GPS, 2 echo sounders, forward-looking sonar, autopilot, media drive for watching movies, onboard PC with WiFi internal net for sharing files, public wireless  printer and scanner,  chart plotter, Satellite Iridium Phone with email and weather download capabilities, a large separate kitchen  and a large saloon for 12 guests. She carries all the safety equipment required, including Epirb beacon, 2 SARTs, a line throwing device,  2 liferafts, flares, Handheld VHFs, SOLAS lifejackets, inflatable lifejackets, Full Co2 engine room firefighting system, etc.  She is a very sturdy and comfortable boat with huge forward and aft decks for transporting equipment, samples, and making your life easier when dealing with equipment or diving bottles and compressor- we are very happy with her!
